"Watercolor Landscapes Painted Around the World"
(A 25 Year Retrospective, 1990-2015)
by Ed Willer of Wilmette
On display until October 14
Watercolorist Ed Willer liked to draw houses as a child and attended the Milwaukee School of Art in Milwaukee where he grew up. He originally wanted to be an architect but after a summer job in an architect’s office while in high school, he changed his mind and instead obtained undergraduate and graduate degrees in Business.  Upon graduation, he joined  the Sears Corporate Offices in Chicago as an assistant buyer in 1963 and had a varied 27 year career in Merchandising and Real Estate, retiring in 1990 as a Real Estate Director. Upon retirement, Ed decided to return to art and started taking watercolor classes at the NSAL, studying with James Wisnowski, William Doughty, Peggy Macnamara and Fran Vail. He also took classes at the Peninsula Art School in Door County, Wisconsin, where he is now represented by the Northern Territories Galleries. In addition, he takes classes at the Art Center Sarasota in Florida, where Ed and his wife Mary spend the winter months, and has taken workshops all over the country.
Ed joined the NSAL Board, was actively involved for several years and remains a sustaining Board Member. Ed also was a Board Member of the Wilmette Arts Guild and a founding member of the St. Francis Xavier Arts Guild.
Ed loves the transparency of watercolor and strives to do somewhat semi-abstract free- flowing landscapes. He agrees with artist Ian Stewart’s philosophy “to try to SUGGEST and not STATE in his paintings”, allowing viewers to draw their own conclusions, getting them more involved in the painting.
