Appearance Review/Signs

Village of Wilmette Appearance Review Commission consists of five members with relevant experience in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, graphic design and/or engineering. The Appearance Review Commission reviews au commercial and multi-family applications for an Appearance Review Certificate for new construction, exterior remodeling, additions, off-street parking, landscaping, lighting, awnings, and erection or alteration of any fence or signage. The Appearance Review Commission is the final authority and recommends au sign variations from the sign ordinance to the Village Board for final approval.

Applying for Appearance Review Certificate

General Guidelines for all Applications:
All submittals shall be accompanied by:
  • A legal description and proof of ownership (recent tax bill, deed or title insurance).
  • Seven copies (7) copies are required if the proposal is in color and/or larger than 11" x 17".
    No freehand sketches or polaroid photos will be accepted.
    All drawings are to be to scale (indicated on drawing) and capable of being reduced to a 8.5 " x 11 " format.
  • 3" x 5" photos (35 mm) of existing site or elevation and neighboring sites or elevations.

Application for Awnings

  • Elevations drawn to scale showing:
    awning relative to building
    lettering style and size
    how awning is attached to building
  • Material sample showing color.
  • Lettering sample showing color, size and style.

Application for a Sign

  • Sign detail drawing drawn to scale showing:
    dimensions
    lettering style
    proposed colors
    construction details
  • Elevations drawn to scale showing: sign relative to building lettering style
  • Material samples showing color
  • Plat of survey or site plan showing sign location
  • Optional color slides of existing site or elevation

Application for Fences

  • Site plan or plat of survey showing location of fence(s) and gate(s).
  • Elevation drawn to scale showing fence detail.

Application for Landscaping

  • Landscaping plan showing all proposed plant material and installed size
  • Plant list with Latin and common names
  • 3" x 5" photos (35 mm) of specimen plant material.

Application for Additions and Facades

  • Site plan showing:
    size of addition
    location of dumpsters
    awnings
    downspouts
    signage
    fences
    parking spaces as proposed
    drainage patterns
  • Elevation drawn to scale showing all sides of structure and materials to be used.
  • Material samples of construction material showing colors.

Application for Exterior Lighting

  • Photo of light fixture with manufacturer's specifications
  • Optional materials sample of light fixture
  • Site plan showing the location of all fixtures
  • Optional 3" x 5" photos (35 mm) of light fixture and fixture location.

Application for New Construction

  • Architect's drawings showing elevations of all sides of structure.
  • Site plan showing:
    parking spaces as proposed
    dumpsters
    fences
    accessory structures
    drainage patterns
    signage
    awnings
  • Materials samples of all construction material including brick, tile, glass (if other than clear), metal trim, stone, roofing material, wood, paint and stain samples.

Please Note:

Before filing the application, the applicant is strongly encouraged to schedule a preapplication meeting with the Director of Community Development and other Village staff, as appropriate, to discuss the proposed project and to become more familiar with all applicable requirements and approval procedures of the Village of Wilmette, including this section and other regulations of the Village of Wilmette codes including but not limited to the Building Code, the Sign Ordinance, and Site Plan Review Ordinance.

Upon receipt of a complete application, including related drawings and materials, a review date will be provided. The applicant or their designee must attend the review meeting. The Appearance Review Commission generally meets the first and third Monday the month.
