Wilmette's special character is exemplified by its single-family residences, attractive commercial areas, brick-paved streets, tree-lined streets, period street lights, and proximity to Lake Michigan. The character of the Village cannot be maintained without also preserving these resources. One way the Village accomplishes this is through the efforts of the Historic Preservation Commission.
Through the Historic Preservation Commission, several properties have been designated local historic landmarks, helping to preserve their contribution to their neighborhood. Two areas of unique character in the Village have been designated national register historic districts. Public education is central to preserving the character of Wilmette.
