Additional Special Services

The Wilmette Fire Department belongs to MABAS (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) Division III which is a mutual aid box alarm system shared by adjoining communities. The member towns provide firefighters for special training and response in each of the teams listed below. When a specific emergency develops in our division, Wilmette Fire Department team members respond to the incident.

Hazardous Materials Response Team
The MABAS Division III Hazardous Material Response Team (HMRT) is a combined effort of Division III personnel who are trained and organized to respond to hazardous material incidents in the North Shore area. Each member is trained in accordance with nationally recommended standards and review these skills monthly. Drills include classroom training and simulated responses to incidents. The goal of the team is to provide response personnel and equipment necessary to control and mitigate a hazardous materials release. The equipment used for the Hazardous Materials Response Team is transported in two vehicles which are stored in Glenview.
Under Water Rescue Team

The MABAS Division III Underwater Rescue and Recovery Dive Team is a combined effort of fire and police department personnel who are trained and organized to perform tasks related to incidents. The team will provide underwater rescue and recovery service as requested by agencies within MABAS Division III. All MABAS Division III Dive Teams will operate under MABAS Division III Dive Team Operating Guidelines. The goals are to provide immediate response of trained water/ice rescue personnel and specialized equipment to the scene of water/ice incidents for the purpose of affecting a rescue.

Special Rescue Team

The MABAS Division III Special Rescue Team is comprised of approximately fifty members who respond to emergencies involving above ground (high-rise, water tank), below ground (trench, tunnel), and confined space rescues. The team members are highly trained and equipped to respond to such emergencies. The equipment inventory ranges from high tech rappelling gear to hydraulic and air shoring systems which are stored in a mobile trailer housed at the Northern Illinois Public Safety Academy facility located at the former Glenview Naval Air Base.
