Village President Christopher S. Canning
Christopher S. Canning was elected Village President of Wilmette, Illinois on April 5, 2005 after serving on the Village’s Zoning Board of Appeals for seven years, the last three as its Chairman. Chris was reelected in April 2009 to a second term. As President, Chris also serves as the chair of the Village’s Business Development Advisory Group and the chair of the Fire Pension Board. Canning was born and raised in Wilmette and has lived in Wilmette for over 46 years.
In 2008, as part of his efforts to encourage business development in the Village, Canning worked with the Urban Land Institute on a two-day technical assistance panel to advise the village on ideas to revitalize the central business district. Canning is now spearheading the development of a multi-year master plan for the village.
Since 2006, Canning has spearheaded efforts to combat the growth of the Emerald Ash Borer infestation in Wilmette and throughout Illinois. He speaks regularly to groups throughout the state about the Village’s experience to date and has worked closely with the private parties and state and federal officials on developing strategies to combat this infestation. His work has been recognized by the National Arbor Day Foundation and the Illinois Arborists Society and he has received national media coverage from the “Today Show.”
Chris graduated from Loyola Academy, earned his undergraduate degree from Boston College, and earned his law degree from Loyola University School of Law in Chicago. Upon graduation, he worked at the international law firm Winston & Strawn for 12 years handling a variety of litigation and other matters. In 2000, he became the general counsel of One-On-One Sports, the nation’s largest sports talk radio network. That same year, One-On-One was acquired by Vulcan, Inc. (owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen) and merged with The Sporting News
, the nation’s oldest sports publication, to form Vulcan Sports Media, Inc. Effective with that merger, Canning became Vice President and General Counsel of Vulcan Sports Media. In 2006, Canning became President of Vulcan Sports Media. In 2009, Chris and his wife Barbara opened their law practice, Canning & Canning LLC in Wilmette serving clients throughout the Chicago area.
Canning has served as a member of Evanston Hospital’s Community Advisory Council since 2006, and the RTA’s Regional Citizen Advisory Board since 2010. Canning also served as the initial school board president for the reopening of St. Joseph School in Wilmette from 1998-2001. Canning also coaches youth basketball, softball and baseball.
