Public Health Nursing Services Public Health Nursing is the practice of promoting and protecting the health of populations using the knowledge from nursing, social, and public health sciences. The Village has offered the public health nursing services since before the turn of the 20 th century.
The Village Nurse enhances the health and well-being of all residents through:
- Nursing services that incorporate health promotion and disease prevention in general programs of adult and child health, communicable disease control, and assessment of disease and disability;
- Assistance to state and federal and other local public health departments in monitoring and implementation of public policy programs;
- School nursing services that coordinates services with the public elementary and secondary schools and the two parochial schools to identify and interpret the public health regulations, policies and procedures; and
- Assessment of health and health care needs of a community. Implements new health care programs accordingly. Considers environment, social and personal health factors affecting health status. Knows available resources for dissemination of information and referral.
The Village Nurse conducts health screenings for hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol, colorectal cancer, osteoporosis and adult and hearing. In addition, the Nurse administers the CPR program, communicable disease program, the medical sharps collection program, beach testing program, the influenza vaccine program, and the parochial grade school health programs.
