Police BadgeChief's Welcome

George Carpenter

Welcome to the Wilmette Police Department, a nationally accredited law enforcement agency committed to delivering professional police services and protection in Wilmette. Serving since 1886, the Wilmette Police Department is staffed today by 46 police officers and 21 civilian employees. The per resident cost of about 81 ¢ a day for police service is among the lowest costs on the north shore. I invite you to review the Mission and Values Statement which describes the guiding philosophy of this organization.

The Wilmette Police role is not simply that of "law enforcer". Police personnel are public officials who are trained to provide a wide variety of services, and to help solve problems each day for people throughout the community. Police programs all have the objective of working in partnership with residents and businesses alike to preserve the low crime rate and high quality of life which exists in Wilmette.

The partnership between police and community, and the problem solving approach the police employ, include crime prevention and traffic safety programs, social services, juvenile intervention strategies, criminal investigations, the DARE program which is taught in every fifth grade classroom, enhanced 9 - 1 - 1 (a life saving technology), summer bicycle patrols, an annual open house, annual report of crime in Wilmette, and surveys of resident opinions and attitudes, to name just a few.
