The Sewer and Water division of the Department of Public Works provides for the cleaning, repair and required maintenance and improvements of the Village's sewer systems and water distribution systems. The sewer systems include the combined sewer east of Ridge Road and the separate sanitary and storm sewer systems west of Ridge Road. In all, the department is responsible for the maintenance of over 145 miles of sewers and 100 miles of water mains. The Sewer and Water division is staffed with 12 employees.
The Sewer and Water department is responsible for repairing or replacing sewer mains and catch basins, laterals from drains and manholes. In addition, its staff also cleans sewers, and performs closed circuit television camera inspections of sewer mains. Of the 145 miles of sewers located beneath Wilmette, the Sewer and Water division inspects roughly 30 miles each year. The division will perform dye tests of residential down spouts and sump pumps in order to verify proper connections to Village sewers. A fee may be charged for the dye test. If residents have any questions regarding dye testing, or to schedule a test, please contact (847) 853-7621.
The maintenance of the Village's water distribution system involves a variety of tasks. In addition to providing general maintenance and repairs for water mains, water services, fire hydrants and water main valves, the Sewer and Water division also provides taps onto water mains for new residences. There is a fee for this service. To schedule a water main tap, please contact the Village Yard at (847) 853-7500 after the necessary permits have been obtained.
Additionally, in the event of a waterman break, residents should call the Village Yard at (847) 853-7500. For main breaks that occur after 3:00 PM on weekdays, or during the weekends, please contact the Wilmette Police Department at (847) 256-1200.
