Traffic sign maintenance also falls under the responsibilities of the Street division. In addition to these tasks, the Street division also directs the Village's street sweeping and leaf removal programs, and coordinates snow plowing. If you would like to contact the Street division, please call the Village Yard at (847) 853-7500.

Leaf Removal

The Street department handles the collection and disposal of leaves from residential property. The leaf season begins in mid-October and runs until early December. Residents are instructed to pile their leaves on the street, after which Village crews will push them on leaf pans and deposit them in packer trucks. Please note that no bags of any type are to be used. To find out the leaf collection dates that effect your street, please call (847) 853-7500.

Snow Plowing

The Village of Wilmette officially begins its snowplowing program when icing conditions arrive. Once these conditions are present, arterial streets, railroad crossings and certain intersections are salted. The plowing of Village streets begins after two inches of snow has fallen. Arterial streets and bus routes are plowed first, followed by residential streets and sidewalks. Priority is given to sidewalks located in the various business districts, as well as those that are designated school walking routes. Alleys are plowed after four inches of snow has accumulated.

To allow access for trucks applying salt, cars are prohibited from parking on one side of any street less than 27-feet in width during winter precipitation events. A winter precipitation event is defined as any event of snowfall, sleet, freezing rain or ice regardless of accumulation. This parking restriction shall be in effect during the event and an additional 24 hours after the event or until the clearing operations are completed, whichever is sooner.

Vehicles are prohibited from parking on the street anytime after two inches of snow have fallen. There is no parking on the streets during a snow event for 24 hours or until the streets are plowed curb to curb. The Village's goal is to make streets, sidewalks and public parking lots accessible as soon as possible during and after winter storms. For more information on the snowplowing program, please contact the Village Yard at (847) 853-7500.
