You can have the Village plant a tree and enjoy watching it grow. The Village is offering residents the opportunity to have a tree planted on the parkway with the Village covering most of the cost. Also, the Village will arrange to have a tree planted on private property where the resident is willing to pay the Village's cost.
Trees do not survive as well when planted in the hot summer. Some types have better survival rates if planted in the fall while other types, such as oaks, should be planted in the spring. The Village has both spring and fall planting programs, which offer different types of trees. See tree planting application for due date. Applications are available at the Village Hall or by clicking one of the following:
Why plant trees? Trees purify the air by removing carbon dioxide and putting oxygen back into the atmosphere. It is nature's way to help rejuvenate the environment. Besides reducing the heat-trapping, carbon dioxide buildup in the earth's atmosphere, trees protect against erosion from wind and water, keep things cooler in hot weather and warmer in cold weather. Residents who plant trees add to the value and beauty of their properties. They also help to improve the environment in Wilmette and the world.
It is easy. If you have space on your own property or on the parkway adjacent to your property, just sign up for the Village's Cooperative Tree Planting Program. Under this program residents can arrange to have a young tree planted by a reputable nursery under the Village's wholesale contract. The cost of the tree is less when purchased through the Village and in the case of a parkway tree; the Village will cover a significant portion of the cost. Applications must be submitted prior to September 26, for trees to be planted this spring.
