Influenced by new trends in European design, particularly the Bauhaus, the Art Modern style evolved in the United States in the 1930s. It is characterized by rectangularity, low-relief, simplified ornament and simple massing. Because this style was typically adapted in large cities for commercial and public buildings, very few residential examples are to be found on the North Shore. One excellent example of this style is at 1708 Lake Avenue (1938) designed by R. W. Stott.
