Village Board Approves Solid Waste Contracts

The Village Board of Trustees voted to approve a three-year contract extension with current residential solid waste disposal provider Advanced Disposal. The extension is projected to save the Village more than $1.2 million over the next five years.

Wilmette residents will experience no rate increases in four of the next five years as a result of negotiations by the Village in consultation with the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County. Residents will also have access to permanent electronics recycling drop-off at Wilmette Public Works and subscription based curbside composting of organics as a result of the contract extension.

“Maintaining rates while providing expanded environmentally friendly disposal options is a great achievement for Wilmette residents,” stated Village Manager Tim Frenzer. “The Village remains committed to implementing green initiatives when cost effective and this was a great opportunity to provide more services to our residents.” The composting program will begin in 2019 and operate April through November during the same time period as the yard waste program.

The Village will also benefit from annual savings of $120,000 as Advanced Disposal assumes responsibility for hauling and disposing of leaves collected by Wilmette Public Works crews during the annual leaf collection program.

More information will be forthcoming to inform residents of these exciting new services and how to take advantage of them.

At the Tuesday regular meeting, the Board of Trustees also approved a commercial waste franchise extension with Advanced Disposal. The agreements provide for services to December 31, 2023.
