Fire Department Improves ‘Turnout’ Time through Inter-Departmental Collaboration

The Wilmette Fire Department can now respond even faster thanks to a Pre-Alert Notification from the Police Department.

When a 911 call is placed and a police dispatcher determines it to be a Fire Department or EMS response, the call is transferred to the Fire Dispatchers at RED Center, which dispatches multiple departments and has dispatchers trained in Emergency Medical Dispatch who can provide pre-arrival medical instruction designed to improve patient outcomes. The Police Department now provides a simultaneous notification to the Fire Department resulting in reduced ‘turnout time’—the time it takes for fire department personnel to put on their protective equipment, get into vehicles, and pull out of the station. Wilmette is committed to exploring and implementing efficiency measures and leveraging technology to reduce the overall response time even more and improve public safety.
