Recycling Holiday Decorations

Disposal and Recycling Guidelines for Holiday Decorations

  • DO RECYCLE (in toter for weekly collection): Paper gift wrap, cardboard boxes, cardboard rolls and paper greeting cards.
  • DON’T RECYCLE (in toter for weekly collection): Plastic or foil gift wrap, tissue paper, plastic bags, plastic cards, rope or plastic handle gift bags, tree strands, Styrofoam peanuts, packing material, glitter, ribbons, bows and string.

If you are unsure if an item can be recycled through the curbside program, check acceptable items.

Christmas Tree Collection

Christmas trees will be collected for composting during the first two weeks of January, starting January 3 (due to holiday service delay) through January 13. Please place your Christmas tree at the location of your regular recycling pickup. Residents with alley access should place trees in the alley to ensure timely collection. Only residents without alley access should place trees at the curb for collection. Trees must be free of any string lights, ornaments, tinsel, garland and plastic/fabric bag wrap.

 Holiday Light Recycling

Don’t put holiday light strings in the trash – recycle them! Bring old or broken string lights and extension cords to the Village’s Public Works facility at 711 Laramie Ave. The recycling boxes are located in the visitor’s parking lot and accessible 24-hours a day through Jan. 31. This program is offered with the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC)

 Styrofoam Recycling

December 27 – January 9, 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (Monday – Friday), 711 Laramie

Help keep holiday packaging out of our landfills! Go Green Wilmette is offering Styrofoam collection for recycling at the Village’s Public Works facility. Please ring the bell upon arrival. Styrofoam will be taken to Abt Electronics to be melted into a material that can be reused – it is not collected in the Village’s curbside program. No peanuts or food containers; white Styrofoam only. Thanks to UMF/Perfect Clean Corporation for the use of their van for transporting the materials.
