Disposal and Recycling Guidelines for Holiday Decorations

  • DO RECYCLE: Paper gift wrap, cardboard boxes, cardboard rolls, and paper greeting cards.
  • DON’T RECYCLE: Plastic or foil gift wrap, tissue paper, plastic bags, plastic cards, rope or plastic handle gift bags, tree strands, Styrofoam peanuts, packing material, glitter, ribbons, bows and string.

If you are unsure if an item can be recycled through the curbside program, check acceptable items.


Holiday Lights

24-hour drop-off outside Wilmette Public Works, 711 Laramie Ave., Through January 31

Don’t put holiday light strings in the trash – recycle them! Bring old or broken string lights to the Village’s Public Works facility for recycling. The Village, in partnership with Elgin Recycling, is offering a Holiday Light Recycling Program, free of charge, for all area residents. Only string lights are accepted (no lawn ornaments, lighted garland, etc.) and please remove all packaging/bags.


Christmas Tree Collection

Christmas trees will be collected for composting now through January 12. Please place your Christmas tree at the location of your regular pickup. Residents with alley access should place trees in the alley to ensure timely collection. Only residents with curbside collection should place trees at the curb for collection. Trees must be free of any string lights, ornaments, tinsel, garland, and plastic/fabric bag wrap.


Electronics Recycling
