The Wilmette Fire Department will be holding its annual open house on Saturday, October 9th, 2021, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8th, 1871, and caused devastating damage. This year’s campaign, “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety!” aims to educate everyone about the different sounds the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms make.
In addition to increasing your knowledge of fire prevention and safety, this event provides an opportunity to learn about the many services provided by the Wilmette Fire Department. Come on out to view the vehicles and equipment used by your first responders to help keep you and your family safe from fires and other hazards. Specially trained paramedics will be on hand to perform a “teddy bear checkup,” so kids be sure to bring your favorite stuffed animal with you! Plenty of other activities such as vehicle extrication demonstrations featuring the “Jaws of Life,” SCUBA divers interacting with our guests inside a special dive rescue tank, and even the opportunity to participate in a technical, high-angle rescue of a firefighter! There will be plenty of activities for guests of all ages to enjoy.
This year’s event will be held rain or shine. Due to COVID-19, access to the fire station will be limited to restrooms only. The Wilmette Fire Department encourages all attendees to follow appropriate mask/social distancing Guidelines per the CDC.
