Beginning in October 2021, the Land Use Committee of the Village Board began researching and developing amendments to the existing tree preservation ordinances. The Village Board approved the updated tree preservation ordinance at their March 8, 2022 meeting. The Village of Wilmette is excited to announce that the Village will be working with WS Development and Wayfair to redevelop Edens Plaza. WS Development is purchasing Edens Plaza and has executed a lease with Wayfair for over 152,000 square feet of retail space, which would fill the vacant two-story building formerly home to Carson Pirie Scott.
WS Development plans to revitalize the shopping center with Wayfair at the core of this effort. This location will be the first to feature this brand-new retail concept for Wayfair, with plans for opening in mid-2023.
On October 27, 2020 the Village Board granted Optima Wilmette Final Planned Unit Development (PUD) approval for a mixed-use building on the site of the International Bank, 1210 Central Avenue. The proposed development consists of 109 rental dwelling units and approximately 6,000 square feet of ground floor retail/restaurant space. Demolition of the previous International Bank site started the week of 9/27/21.
The Village’s Environmental & Energy Commission has drafted a comprehensive sustainability plan for the Village in accordance with the goals of the Greenest Region Compact. At their September 28, 2021 meeting, the Village Board of Trustees voted to adopt Wilmette’s Greenest Region Compact (GRC2) Sustainability Plan! Click here to view the plan.
Following five years of study and an intensive public education campaign, the Wilmette Board of Trustees voted on April 17, 2018 to pursue a stormwater improvement project to address flooding issues for residents who live west of Ridge Road. Phase 3 construction started in March 2022.
At their September 28 Village Board meeting, Trustees adopted an ordinance permitting the sale of adult-use cannabis at Edens Plaza as a special use permit. At this time, applicants would be eligible to submit a Special Use application to locate a dispensary at Edens Plaza, . The Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) would consider the matter and make a recommendation to the Village Board who has final authority to either approve or deny a special use application.
